Jailbreaking iphone

I have an iPhone 3Gs and I'm tired of not being able to customize everything (I'm picky with my technology).

What's the best way to do it?

Is 8gb gonna run the software well and leave room for music and whatnot?

I appreciate that but I'm really just looking for an answer from someone who might happen to know from direct experience. All my googling is leading me to conflicting information.
I hear ya and heard stories of people doing it but never did it myself. I did hack a cell phone once but made an oops and somehow ending up on Sprints network instead of my own; I had to have the entire phone reformatted at Verizon which took 1hr. I stopped doing that for if I can't fix it I don't want to mess with it.

I do see Unlocked phones in stores.

So in short, if I wanted to do that, I am certain the correct answer will be in there.

I've jail broken before but it was years ago and there were straight forward instructions. From what I'm reading it's doable with my phone on its current os but it's hard to tell what's sponsored shenanigans and what's a legitimate jailbreak thingamagig.

What are you worried about? Push comes to shove just set to factory default.
It's not even that. I've tried different methods and they don't lead anywhere. Cydia never actually gets installed and the whole process is just about trying to get me to click pop ups. There's gotta be a method that works but there are so many that don't.

I did hear about certain versions of an OS can prevent it. See about that.

I saw that. But it's only there on the keyboard. You'd still have to open something for the keyboard to pop up. I want a search box like on androids. It's a convenience that would only save me about 4 seconds by not having to open safari but I still want it.

Doesn't iOS Spotlight Search do that? Swipe down on the iOS home screen, enter search terms, it returns results from the web.
