without isolating the tracks, you really cant tell his bass was clipping like that. what i would do is just get any good drive pedal, and forget about the clipping. a sansamp would be good enough for this, anything with a big bottom and capable of low gain tubeyness

I agree. In any case, that sound probably just replicates on a recording some of the punch you get when playing live, anyway. I doubt it would add much useful to a live mix.
 
OK guys thanks for the help I decided to go with the EBS valve drive and I'm really pleased with the sound and have suprised myself that I'm using the "modern" setting more than the "vintage" setting which suprised me! anyhow it sounds great with my Telecaster too...:)
