I definitely prefer Zender's playing myself. This is my favorite bassline from him. I haven't seen any of the other players be able to write basslines as creative as this regularly like Stuart did in the band. The other ones sound like hired guns called in for a studio session rather than a cohesive gang of contribution, especially Paul. They're great bassists, just don't appeal to me as much.

Wow, you have no idea how much I disagree about Paul Turner. And they were ALL hired hands. Jamiroquai is Jay Kay. Any resemblance to a democracy is purely coincidental.

Okay, I'll chime in...
I like all of the Jamiroquai bassists, frankly, but what I can't get over his HOW YOUNG Stuart Zender was when they "broke" (ie "arrived on the scene"). He was a KID! Early 20s. How can anyone get that good at such a young age?
I mean, he was technically sound, had serious chops, AND penned some of their best, most creative bass lines. I'm always blown away by how surreally superhuman some musicians, artists and athletes are at such a young age.
Christ, I sound like the old guy I am! I'm really looking forward to the next phase of life:

My understanding is that was what caused Zender to leave - the fact that the band's early efforts were largely collaborative, with many of the musicians actively contributing to the songs and overall sound of Jamiroquai. Then, when the record companies started dealing with Kay, he gave himself most of the songwriting credit and the rest of the band got BUPKIS (Yiddish for 'goat droppings').
Like I said, just my understanding, which, on any given day, is pretty much on par with my dog's. Oh well, it makes for a good story, anyway. Reminds me of the movie "Meatballs", they're telling ghost stories around a campfire and it comes down to The Big Finish: "and instead of his right hand... he had a metal... HOOK!" and Spaz says, "I heard the same thing, only it was his foot."
Yeah, there's my understanding, right there.

Agreed. I found Zender's playing a bit quirky at times but he had some really good moments though. Turner is a groove machine. Excellent player.Paul Turner to me is the best of them all.
Well, it’s as valid as my understanding of it, which is limited to public perception, and it was always presented to the public as Jay Kay being the ultimate decision maker and driving force, and some people left because of it. They have their reasons, and they’re as valid as any. I’m in no position to comment on whether Jay Kay was a good and fair leader or not, either. Some things just are.
What a thoughtful reply - and clearly presented - the way things stand as of now, I would vote for YOU for president, Jimmy. How 'bout it, POTUS looks pretty good on a résumé. I hear the hours are TERRIBLE, though, but the pay is alright, plus you get to fly around in that nifty helicopter, the Batchopper or whatever they call it. With Catwoman as your personal, in-flight valet? I mean come on, what do you say?
