I am curious as to what Japanese custom and coutique builders there are.

Not large companies with a custom shop or companies having their basses just built there for proper craftsmanship and lower prices.

Proper Boutique annd custom builders and properly Japanese.

I've always heard that the guitar shops in Japan are some of the best in the world.

I went to a bass shop there which was by far the tidiest I have ever seen-including youtube videos. With great equipment on show and fantastic service.

Another vote for STR basses. Build wise they are as good as any bass I've ever had in my hands. Amazing basses.

I’ve got a Sugi and it’s the best Jazz Bass I’ve had in 45 years. Generally, be it audio or guitar, Japanese builders do fantastic work and we usually don’t get their best work, so we usually don’t get to see it, but when you do, WOW, it’s good stuff! and it ain’t cheap…
