Sorely tried by various injuries, Jason Newsted now prefers to concentrate on studio work.

"He had several operations of the shoulders and neck. He is not likely to do live performances ever again, because he is afraid of getting hurt again, "said Denis "Snake" Bélanger [Voivod].

"Even in the beginning, it was not sure that he would complete the new album. One day he called us to tell us was ready to go and the day after playing he was in agony. He has helped us a lot to get this project going."

Despite his retirement from the stage, it is not out of the question that Newsted may make an appearance at an upcoming Voivod concert.

"It could happen," said Belanger, but I'm not sure he could do the full show. It could be only a few songs. "

I guess all that headbanging finally took its toll, thanks for the memories and smooth bass playing Jason :bassist:

Totally sucks. Playing live is such a rush... he will be dealing with some serious withdrawal, I'm sure, as if he hasn't gone through enough already.

But retiring is the honorable thing in this situation... as opposed to going out there out of your mind on prescription painkillers, which do serious damage to your internal organs if used too much or too long.

I know he messed up his shoulder trying to catch a falling SVT (a dumb move in hindsight, but it must have been pure reflexes to try and grab it), but I didn't know he was hurt that bad. Poor guy, he's a great bassplayer.

Dang, I didn't know that happened. I got rid of my SVT due to weight and the fact that the last time I moved it to play I pinched a nerve in a finger; I can't imagine what it would have been like to try and catch.

Never had a big impact on my playing either. Nor have I ever particularly liked Metallica and all the more as I find out more about them as people. It doesn't mean you can't still feel for the guy though. How would you feel if you could never step on a stage again?
