Jason Scheff with Chicago

I hear you...those earliest Chicago albums with the original guys are spectacular. Their 1st album is one of the best debuts ever...any genre, IMO.
That said, Jason has been in Chicago longer than Cetera (not exactly a "johnny-come-lately")...& if one guy coulda assumed Cetera's spot, Jason is perfect.

Chicago's first singer/bassist, the great Peter Cetera helped define the genre known as jazz/rock, and that is a historical fact that cannot be changed. However, Jason Scheff is also a great bassist, AND a great singer. He is keeping the GREAT music of Chicago alive for new generations of fans, and putting his stamp on the stuff while he covers it. One "live" performance comes to mind - the song, "Alive Again" ( see youtube ). Scheff did such a great job that Lamm actually commended him "live" after that performance.

P.S. - Saw Peter Cetera solo in concert, and hoped he would grab a bass, and start showing off the chops, but, alas, it seems that we may never be lucky enough to see Cetera play bass again. That is truly unfortunate.

Chicago has been a facsimile of it's former self longer than it was it's actual self, it seems.

I'm sure Jason Scheff is a fantastic guy but I know that Bill Champlin is a a fantastic guy and a step up from anybody that might have preceded him/them. I saw a semi-rare Sons of Champlin gig a few years ago (I mixed monitors) and to say I was inspired was an understatement. They have the unimportant label of being the replacement guys.

I agree exactly. Jason can't sing as well, but he can play rings around Peter.

IMHO Jason is probably a better bass player and all round musician, however, Peter has undeniable 'X factor' and 'finger-print chemistry' especially for Chicago (but also for his own solo career), more than Jason.
