Jay Turser JTB-401?

I had one of these and did alot of mods to it. Great bass. I ended up building a Parts 55' Precision bass to take the place of the Turser... Here are some pictures:

Thinking real hard about snatching up one of these.. My GC has 5 in stock: 2 Ivory, 3 Sunburst, and one Black.

I just need to justify buying another bass....

Anybody else thinking about sticking a lace guitar pickup in there in place of the stock one?

You are only thinking about a pickup swap because you haven't rocked one yet. The pickup is amazing. Lots of deep thump and quite zingy with the stock strings. I am going to change the strings to flats soon then it should be perfect.

Got one for my son....VERY light body..playability and the sound was great.
I did change out the pots...a lot of polishing compound in the cavity, and it got into the cheap pots making them "scratchy" sounding.

Very good for the money!

ps..."stock"
pickup is impressive!

I've had the semi-hollowbody model Jay Turser bass for the better part of three years now, and it's pretty dope. With the two year-old Chromes it wears, it kills. The thing I like about it is that it has the three-way pickup switch so I can get big and full off the neck pickup, snappy and tight with the bridge pickup, or blend the two which is what I usually do. I don't think I'll be parting with it anytime soon.

this is beautiful. My dream bass to the T.

I bought the sunburst jtb-401 for $89 a couple weeks ago at guitar center, used of course. I was originally looking to try the $900 sting bass but saw this and started playing it. Best $89 I ever spent. It sounds great. Don't really care about changing the pickup or strings so far. I played a few gigs with it and it played perfectly..fat, punchy. I actually turn the tone knob all the way down. Never was a treble guy. I normally play/record with a Fender Mexican P bass & honestly, the Turser doesn't sound too different. (yes there's noticeable differences, especially in the craft of the bass. the nut was way off center, hanging off to the right side :hmm:) other than that I love this bass. just like lostrings' photo above, I plan on adding a pup & bridge cover to give it that 50's rock style.

If you're considering getting this bass, stop thinking and just do it. I was seriously thinking about buying 2 of them with a price like that. :)

Indeed, it's a great price for a fairly reputable knock-off builder. I really would buy one of these, but when I was able to make $90 fall into my hands last week (for one of these Turser's, actually), a metallic red Samick Formula-I telecaster copy started telling me I wanted to learn how to play the guitar for the low low price of what i was planning to spend on the Turser..

I have to say, I'm not the least bit disappointed. This thing really does make me want to learn how to play guitar :D Turser 401's are usually always floating around Columbus for $100 - $150, though, so I'm sure I'll get my chance again.

Here's a picture of the tele.. I know this is a bass forum, but she's just so damn PRETTY...

The Squier 50's SCPB in Butterscotch is miles ahead of the Turser I owned.

I tried that nice blue Squire when I saw it, and I preferred my JTB. I'd like to try them A/B, and flats on the Squire for true compare but felt my JT had a nicer, deeper tone and felt chunkier to play (in a good way).

By comparison, I once picked up a Turser PJ bass, plunked two notes on it and put it back. Terrible. Felt like plywood. No resonance. They must have factories here and there, and no set standards between them. I think their models are hit or miss, however they were bought by a Canadian company recently, and everything gets okayed by head office before going out - so I was told.

As prep for my JTB Radelization, to understand proportions and placement etc, I set up this bass image chart. I resized the most similar images I had on hand, to make each body appear in equal proportion (there is camera lens distortion to consider, and the angles are not all exact, but I've got them very close, and the relatives are accurate IMHO).

Interesting to note is the JT's placement of their neck and bridge. Fender has more body behind their necks, but the JT's upper fret access is better. The bass scale distance looks the same though, as both bridge and neck placement looks to be the same amount forward, from the Fender design. Also interesting is how pickups line up, and the difference in pickguards.
