I have recently traded into a highly modified Fender Jazz 5 Active bass but am totally unfamiliar with the pups. They look like standard jazz bass pickups but there are no pole pieces exposed and they have holes where the poles should be but only about a sixteenth of an inch deep. The pickups are not active and the preamp is only 9 volts, does anybody know anything about these pups? They sound tremendous and i have no plans to replace them but as I am new to Fender and unfamiliar with such things I could really use some help.

Jazz 5 pickup concerns

Why do you have a "problem"? Not all jazz-style pickups have exposed poles. My old Aria was smooth. Only usually with those pickups there are no "holes" in the top of the pickup. I suspect that whoever made or modified the pickups couldn't find any no-hole covers and just used the easily available "standard" ones with holes for the poles. None of this affects the tone.
So if the holey "look" is driving you nuts then hit the net and see if you can find the non-hole pickup covers. This is not so simple as they are not popular and jazz pickups come a couple of different sizes. So careful measurements are in order. Also you need to see if the pickups are potted. Wax is OK but epoxy will keep you from removing the old covers.
Personally I'd just ignore it and play bass!
sorry I should have been more clear. I want to identify these pickups so that i can get another set for a mim jazz clone Im planning as a backup bass. the holes dont bother me, in fact they look kinda cool.
Cover the holes with a thin strip of electrical tape. Wrap it around the sides so you don't knock it off. Problem solved!
No doubt, Ive done the tape thing for years because I play finger style. It takes care of the buzz when i touch the poles accidentally.
