I've been having trouble getting a good slap tone out of my bass. I play a jazz with dimarzio dp123's. What do you set you jazz to?

jazz bass slap tone

Front pickup wide open, bridge pickup about 80%, tone full up. I use these settings regardless of the type of pickup.
Both pickups and tone open wide. If I'm not happy with that, rolling a little off the front or back can give you some amazingly different tones. Too bright? Use the tone pot.
I just put together a used parts Jazz, Warmoth neck, Brand X ash body, budget $12.00 pickups, stock factory passive electronics. I've got about $350.00 wrapped up in it. I wasn't expecting much, but it's one of the best slap tones I've ever heard, no kidding. The swamp ash body might help, I dunno.
I've played some Jazzes that I just couldn't get to sound very good slapped, so I understand your frustration. Sometimes it's a mystery.
Can you tell us more about the bass? Woods? String gauge? Set up details?

The nickel-coated steel Rotosounds, RB-40's sound real good. Bright and don't lose it quickly like I've heard about some of their other strings. Three weeks in on a set playing heavily and no change. I play the neck p-up at 60%ish and the bridge at 90%, tone about 50%. Maybe not for everyone, but I like it.
