Jazz over Precision?

Hey!
I'm soon buying a new bass. My only problem is that I can't decide between Precision or Jazz. I've been trying them both several times, to match them up against each other, but I really can't decide which one to go with.

The basses I have in mind is a Fender American Deluxe Jazz V or Fender American Deluxe Precision.

I've heard that with a Jazz you can come pretty close to the P sound. Is that true?

Since I really can't figure it out, I want to ask: Why choose Jazz over the Precision? And vice versa!
Anything is cool!

Thanks!

why wouldnt you just get a precision if you want that sound?
id go with the deluxe p without question.

I always found the bridge pickup to be the thing that makes the jazz bass desirable,at least for me,since the neck pickup is weaker than the precision's. I'd go with the p deluxe since it has the best of both worlds, the jazz's bridge pup growl and the p's big bottom end, unless you really need the 5 string. There's always drop D tuning.

I bought a Jazz, and I have never regretted it. It's the most awesome bass I have ever played, and I will be playing it for years, and keeping it as long as I can.

That said, one time we were being "showcased," and the bass player handed me his Precision. It was an awesome bass, and I enjoyed playing it.

You really can't go wrong with either bass.

But it's not hard to find out the major differences between the two. I would always recommend playing as many as you can get your hands on.

I recommend the same thing before marriage, too.

I'm pretty sure that both of those are active basses. Even though I'm a die-hard p bass player, I'm not a fan of active p basses. Active jazz basses have a great, modern sound to them.

If you're gonna go passive, go with the p bass.
If you're gonna go active, go with the jazz.

A Jazz will sound just like a Precision but the Precision will never sound like a Jazz. Overall, in my opinion the Jazz is a more versatile instrument. Faster neck and more sonic capabilities. I've never owned a P just for those reasons and the necks are just too chunky for me as well. A PJ is ok but you never get that full Jazz sound from them.
Just my two cents.

When I first started playing bass, I didn't know the difference between the two, and chose a Jazz since it seemed a little less ubiquitous than the P bass.

But then I started playing with a blues band and found myself really unable to get that boomy bottom end I was looking for, even using the Jazz's neck pickup alone. So I got a Highway One P, which has been great, but I miss that thin Jazz neck...sigh. The search goes on!

Oh, my mistake! About that with Jazz sounding as a Precision was because I would like a pretty versatile instrument with a growly punchy tone, that cuts right through the guitars.
Well, I'm more a active player 'cause I think I get most possibilities with my tone, though sometimes I just want a bass that just have 1 setting that I always know how sounds and don't have to think about the sound all the time.
And currently I'm a five string player. When I play a 4 string I feel I miss something.
I've also considered getting a MIM Standard P and put a Jazz pickup in it, just for simpleness.

For Me I vote for the Jazz Deluxe.... Not only Because i have one but i just like the feel of the necks and the clean sound i get from it... I am more a Funk/Fusion/Soul typ of person and a like the clean sound... That being said my band does a bit of Reggae and yeah a can still get the jazz to sound good with that too.... In the end get what you think will do what you want it to do for you....If the p sound is what you use most then go that way...but if you are more clean most the time then I would be digging the Jazz!! Bes Of Luck!!! Cheers mate!!~Elliot!!
