jazz pickups help!!!

hi guys, i have a beautiful 1977 jazz that plays like butter BUT, neck pickup ha a low output. (the bridge sounds ace!) i bought another set of 77 pups and dropped them in and exactly the same thing occurred!!! this was wiring them straight to the jack, in all possible configurations ive swapped ot the signal leads and the ground leads to the pickup and everything, and now im proper stuck!! also the tone pot dosen't seem to do a lot!
please help me guys!!

how's the pickup height? i keep the neck pickup higher than the bridge on my 78 to get a balanced sound.

First ask those folks and if you are still having an issue tell him what you have and Lindy will wind you pickups to those specs.

Ditto. It's very unlikely that both sets would defective neck pickups. If you have a ohmmeter you could check them, should be around 7.1K for the necks.

My '77 is much the same, my neck p/u is set lower than my bridge p/u and I always lean on my bridge p/u so it's not an issue for me. I'd just leave it unless you must have a powerful neck p/u.

i dont think its the height because when the loosened strings clack against the pickup, the thump from the bridge is about 3 times louder. i could be (and probably am) wrong tho

but maybe its not that the neck is too low, maybe you need to lower your bridge pickup?

I don't know but make sure you check the little things before you replace pups or do expensive mods.

right, i have raised the bridge pickup (both sets) and lowered the neck. both neck pups meter about 7 ohms. im fresh outa ideas!

right, ive located another pair of 77 jazz pickups, and hot swapped them in and out of this jazz, and exactly the same thing occurred, this was wiring straight to the jack output too!!!!!!! i dont think it is because i have a super output bridge pick up, and the chances of 2 low output neck pickups must be low,
ideas anyone?

perhaps you need to replace the pots?

Check for a weak/bad solder connection.

It wouldn't be the pots since they were bypassed.

I'm guessing here...is there a ground plate under the neck pickup? Is so, put a piece of cardboard or something between it and the pickup to insulate it from the bottom of the pickup and see if that makes a difference.
