Jbass pick leads missing!

I like your thinkin' Slyjoe.

oh one more ?....

Does it help/matter if the leads are "twisted/wrapped" together?
I seem to remember seeing somewhere in forum someone talking about twisting the pup wires to help reduce hum. fact or fiction?

I've had them both ways. Some of my favorites from Aero have had twisted leads. I never noticed them being quieter or less noisy though. I've had a bunch with the vintage style cloth wires - seems pretty similar to me.

My favorites P & J pickups today are foil shielded around the windings and pickup bottom, the leads are inside a braided shield that is attached to the shield around the coil. These are definately single coil - they really pop! but they are also quieter - not as quiet as a humbucker - but they still have the single coil liveliness that I want in a J. I'll see if I can dig up a pic they are just beautifully done.

Whelp!
Wired them same, mounted .... Annnnnnnnnnnnt

Phased

Pulled them out swaped the bridge wires, remount .... beautiful!
Now I have a minor shielding issue. I'm gonna post a few questions on a new thread after I go through the Sticky and search.

Thanks for all of your help SlyJoe and 4Mal!:D

PS 4Mal what PJs are you using? My next project is a 5PJ or 5Jsplits–I can use all the insight I can get!

using a Craftsmen AutoRanging Digi Multimeter (82029)

Neck:
Continuity [OL.]
Resistance [6.12K]

Bridge:
Continuity [OL.]
Resistance [7.5K]

To the knowledgable-ones, do these numbers fly?
I got no reading with the continuity test - just the opening [OL.] screen
I have no idea if thats good or bad.

But I guess the pups are ok since I got a resistance reading from the posts (solder points). Thoughts?

Should the resistance be the same for both pups?
Can I correct it if they need to be the same? (or simply rewind via a pro?)

the values sound right to me...the bridge resistance should be higher on the bridge (more winds on a bridge PU is common with pickups)

solder on the leads and install them...

Glad to hear they work!

Just as a point of reference on the multimeter - I got to thinking about it, and the problem with the continuity check is probably that the cont. mode is made for checking wires, and the DC resistance you were seeing made the meter think it wasn't a straight wire (which it isn't).

I've backed out of PJ'a in favor of P's or J's ... My fav PJ set, when doing alt-country, retro-rock, surf & rock a'billy stuff was a set of Aero Type 11'. Raw, Aggresive and punchy. Real good balance between the J & the P. The Lawrence P-46 and J-45 are a very good set as well. Very quiet, kind of transparent or clear, neutral sounding. I think of them as modern. Very punchy though. Not polite sounding like some other *modern* sounding pickups.

I'm pretty much in line with what is happending at Vintage Vibe these days. He's boutique. It's built to order, not sitting on the shelf. Which means you can talk to Pete about what you want, how you want it to sound before he builds. All for the price of other guy's stuff that is 'stock'. I've had Fralin, Rio, Aero, myriad Duncan's, Lawrence, Lollar, Bartolini, Nordstrand and of course the Dark Star. Fralin, Lollar and Vintage Vibe are the guys when it comes to doing the Vintage Fender thing. Pete's stuff sounds like vintage but is totally modern in terms of construction. So he get's my pickup biz these days.

Other stuff I have loaded currently that I like - well a Dark Star in a project hollow body - way cool that ! Nordstrand Big Split's in a 55-01 - I dig the pickups - hate the Bart pre. Lollar J's in my fretless - probably I'll swap those out soon.

In line with what we were discussing about wiring/phasing,

Audere has a nice explaination in his ground FAQ. After I installed the pup (using the Audere pre with the original 73 Fender pup) I noticed that they were "overall" quiet, just some minor shielding noise. But when I touch the mag on one pickup there was a big spike in noise. This link explained it perfectly...

[Invalid or Expired Link Removed]

I think I'm going to ground the mag on just the noisy pup.
Any thoughts? Possibly do both?

BTW- The pups sound good, nice round vintage tone but with an added brightness (frets/strings) that I hadn't notice with the Barts. I find this added brightness annoying. I'm currently using a BAII but will swapout to the original Fender stock bridge to see what happens to the tone.

Any thought to tame the top end?

If I was to get a new set of pickups (Fralin, VintageVibe, Nords, and-the-like) would I be looking at the "hot" or "overwound" to reduce that topend brightness?
