JBL 4312 studio monitor users?

So my Nakamichi receiver gave up the ghost and all of a sudden a pair of monitors I've been using for years have fallen silent.

I'm curious if anyone else uses these JBLs in their recordings or home stereo systems? Wondering if I should keep them and find a decent power amp, or sell 'em and get a pair of powered desktop speakers.

Any opinions / experiences with these once very popular broadcast / production speakers welcome.

Still have mine. Back in the day, the were my "go to" monitor. These days I use some near fields and if it sounds right on those, I will flip to the JBL's. I running them off an ancient tube Harmon Kardon amp.

I like old equipment. My mastering deck, when I use tape, is an Ampex that wa converted to two inch tape, so I wouldn't have to stock a second size as it's the same as my multi-track.

Fixing the Nak I hope?

I don't think my Nakamichi receiver was ever considered that good - I'm really out of touch of what all this stuff is worth and how much it might cost to replace it.

Slightly off-topic: Regardless of what you do, if you're using these prospective speakers as monitors, do not place them on your desktop. It's virtually impossible to set them up geometrically to the room correctly this way, it's often impossible to get them at ear level, the desk is likely not an appropriate structure for them, if you lean on the desk you can have sympathetic vibration issues that make you perceive more low end than is really there... Lots of potential problems from locating monitors on your desk.

Yeah these have mainly been like nice home stereo floor speakers. I understand that to set them up for reference, they'd have to go up behind the desk. Or I could do like the guys in the radio station and hang em from the corners!
