I recently found two unused JBL D140F's
I looked around the forums for discussions about this speaker but couldn't find all that much. Do people like these? I have no need for them, I was thinking about posting them up on here. Could anyone give me more info? From what I was reading a high powered amplifier would blow them up. Would hate to do that.
I would think they are quite valuable to the people who want D series JBL's.A
The D130 is even more valuable (I think people use them for guitar). Circa 1989 I wound up with this pair of EV Eliminator I clones but they did not have the horns in them. Long story, a complex trade where the boss of the lead singer wanted to sell a buncha gear but I went to look at it and had little interest in it.
So he pressed the lead singer to accept the stuff in lieu of pay, so they wound up at our practice place.
About two months later the singer (who was a total deadbeat did not have a bank account) asked me to cash a paycheck for him. I show up at the bank and it's him AND a friend, and the check is for like 6 times what they normally would have been paid. My BS detector was going off, something was not right but they were insistent, said it was for their pay and some back pay and some materials.....so I cashed the check.
The boss was a hardcore Mormon (the singer was a jack Mormon) and guess what? Two months AFTER THAT come tax time I get batched with a 1099 from the Mormon boss, saying he had paid me like $2,200.
I call him up and he's like "well they wouldn't give me SS numbers and I had to do something to get the deductions". So I told him he decided to RIP ME OFF instead? He kinda laughed and said "well YOUR NAME IS ON THE CHECK".
So I turned the guy into the IRS, I had already filed my taxes, had to file an amended return and pay tax on it; about $300.
Needless to say I was pissed, and kept calling the guy, after about the fourth time he stopped talking to me and would put his wife on the phone.
So I take it to the next level and show up at his house; I KNEW the guy was there, god fearin Mormon and all but he has his wife open the door.
I told her it was at the point where he might want to upgrade his life insurance
Here's the really messed up part.....he keeps bugging the singer about is he going to get paid for the gear!!!!!which frankly was kinda crap. A Kustom rackmount power amp that blew up after I used it like three times for example, I just had to throw that thing away.
Anyway he had kept the stuff in his not very insulated garage; so it turns out the speakers had dry rotted.
I take them out and find out they were JBL D-130F's. At the time they were not that in vogue but I had them reconed and used them in the folded horn EV clones as part of my bass rig.
In the end I actually made out because I was in for about $500, between the tax I had to pay and the recones.
Sold the D-130's for like $450 about 12 years ago, put some E-140's I had in the cabinets for PA use, I still use them in a practice PA to this day.
Sold the high frequency horns (about two feet wide, some brand I never heard of) for about $125, sold the EV-1824M drivers for another $200, then sold the pair of Acoustic "tweeter packs" (these square cabinets that each one had six piezo drivers in it, they were from the late 1970's) for $100 for the pair.
The cabinets actually had EV X-8 passive crossovers inside, so I netted about $60 for the pair of those.
So in the end I wound up making money on the deal but I could not believe this guy did this, hopefully the IRS got him but they never contacted me.
ANYWAY, so when the Mormon dudes on their bicycles show up at my front door, I related a condensed version of this story and then ask them if this is typical of their practitioners LOL.
IT'S VERY EFFECTIVE to get them out of my doorstep in a hurry!
