Double Bass Jim Hall love

I love "Doggin' Around", but my copy has Herb Ellis, not Jim Hall, on guitar. Herb has a more "Jim-like" tone than I ever heard him posess on that record--maybe he had "The Record", meaning Jim Hall and Red Mitchell live at Sweet Basil's, on his mind when he made this. "Doggin' Around" kill's by it's-own-self--"Sweethearts on Parade"?!--I haven't played that in 20 some odd years. I love Red's blues "Life's a Take", too.

Since we're in the DB forum I must recommend the record "Jim Hall and Red Mitchell." It's just Jim and Red jamming away in ways I've never to see duplicated. Changed the way I thought about bass. I've yet to begin my journey into double bass (I'm still just jammin some Jaco on my J-bass) but whenever I listen to that record I just want to pull out an upright and pluck those strings.

Hey, he twarnt nothing without them frets and headstock thingy. (on that silly little 3/4 size POS bass made by some whack job in New England who had a penchant for making basses with necks that were too damm short. And then had the damm nerve to call them "Church Basses"!!! ;) ).
That Lee Farout, he had "issues". Couldn't alway find the tonic in the chord!! I guess I can hardly blame him for that because of that weird piano player he used to play with alot was too selfish to show it to him with his little pinkie finger on his left hand. What kind of **** izzat? Why, I NEVER........
AND, whatz more, if you think I'm "C'moning over" you got another thunk coming. You know I did it once, and was met with the similar attitude a sow Grizzly lays on you with triplet cubs peekin' out from behind her fat ass. So, I'll pass on that one.

Are you sure? I've also got some great vinyl featuring some up-and-comers.... Roy Brown and Phil Chambers, I think.

Yeah, P Dub--I feel you. You, more than anyone, have pointed the way to "The Scriptures" (read, "The Record", and more loosely, the body of Red's Work) and when cats come in not paying attention, it can be a pain. And you know what else burns my *$$??....a flame, held right behind me, about 3 feet high...:rolleyes:..:help:

Ahh-ight...maybe we should cut him some slack. I wouldn't read through the entire pile of **** I've posted here either. Here we have an admitted slabber, and DB aspirant, who's brought up arguably the greatest jazz duo album in history.

He said the album "Changed the way I thought about bass". So maybe we should give him at least a tepid old fart's welcome.

I agree 100%.
You guys, you need to know that we've been down this road many times here on TBDB. These players are some of our heroes on their instruments. If you would like to know some history on both, simply do a TB search on each of their names.
We give crap over here to people who don't give a crap. You guys, obviously, give a crap. So, since you give a crap, please join us in the real joy of listening to these wonderful players who have gone beyond any musical categorization.
If you Google each of thier names you will find amazing music.
Welcome to the fan club.
Bottom line, you have great taste.

EDIT: OOPS. You have this "old fart's welcome".

BTW: It's not Jim w/ Red, but I just almost done died and gone to heaven. I just bought a Hal Leonard Jim Hall DVD from Aebersold not knowing what to expect. Jim Hall, Steve La Spina and a few others.

I just heard/listened to them do "Two's Blues" from Concierto as a duo, and in the DVD they sit around and chat about what they did afterwards (Steve too). This is not a guitar technique DVD as it may be billed so.

BUY THIS!!! FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, BUY IT! RUN!!! DON'T WALK!!!
