Jimmy Haslip slapping??

Jimmy Haslip is a fine bassist and unique as well due to his unorthodox way of playing bass with the strings strung opposite! He also doesn't do much slapping these days either and there are not many recorded samples of him slapping. I went through all my cd's and came up with "Top Secret" from the Mirage a Trois record! I wish he'd do more of this!

I always find it interesting to listen to him. He's a happening player for sure. I'm biased though because I play all messed up and backwards same as him. He's got a great tone too.

Hey, I checked out the pics on your band's website. How do you like that US Master's bass? I was thinking of buying the single P pup version but pulled out at the last minute but I'm still pondering on getting one. Maybe a 2 pickup model sometime in the future.

It's definitely a different-sounding slap- I suppose it'd have to be, seeing as how he wouldn't be able to slap with a standard thump/pluck hand position. I still prefer his fingerstyle- he's got a fantastic tone on his Roscoe and his solos are always great.

BTW, where'd you find this mp3 posted- was it linked from his website?

i know of his work with the yellowjackets but i always have a fear of buying due to the fact that although wem ight love an artist they do sometimes come out with duds and i'm not to familiar with haslip yet, i love his work on the pastorius projects though.

The earliest Yellowjacket's albums were a bit Fusion-y.
Shades was a beginning...when Will Kennedy came aboard, they seemed to hit their stride; Bob Mintzer also added a more Jazz vibe vs. Marc Russo-
Four Corners, Politics, Live Wires, The Spin are all good; IMO, ypu can't go wrong with any of those.
Like A River & Greenhouse get a bit more orchestral...still good stuff.
Dreamland & Blue Hats[/i] are also very decent.

Club Nocturne...a bit Smooth. Blecchhh.

I do have one of their later ones-
Time Squared; it's OK.
I haven't picked up their last one, Altered State(I think it's their last one).

The first version of the band also had Robbin Ford and Rickey Lawson. I didn't like Mark Russo's sound and style at all. Will Kennedy changed the whole vibe of the band and I think overall they wanted to have a deeper more intensive sound at that time. A lot of folks don't realize that Jimmy is Puertorican either! His solo stuff is basically latin jazz fusion. Really deep stuff! I love his Red Heat cd!

I seem to remember seeing Jimmy Haslip on SNL with Chaka Khan slapping on "I Feel for You" about 20+ years ago. I might be wrong though.

Four Corners and Samurai Samba are both good, too, and have some excellent songs on them, but they're a little too "80's" for me.

I'm pretty much feel the same as you on this,especially the 1st 2 albums because I'm a big Robben Ford fan

Also check out Robben Ford's album "Inside Story." I've always considered it the very first Yellowjackets album. It's a little dated but more in a nostalgic sense considering what we have to listen to today.
