JMJ update 4/9/13

Hi all,

Just thought I'd give an update.

- Paramore's self-titled record came out today. I'm very excited. I put a lot into that one, and to see it debut at #1 in so many countries has been a great pleasure.

- Recently finished a record with the band Crystal Fighters which comes out next month.

- Just began work on the next album from the excellent The Naked and Famous from Auckland, NZ.

- Put the wraps on the soon to be released record for my own band/project, Digital Noise Academy. It sounds great.

- Going to NY later in the month to continue work with the exquisite School of Seven Bells.

- Managing to do some fun bass sessions and Beck recording amongst all this other stuff.

- Playing with M83 on Jimmy Kimmel this week.

I have been listening to the new P-more record here in Australia for the last few days. Take a bow sir! To me, you've managed to capture the energy, honesty and excitement of a band who seem like they've finally spread their wings and been unleashed. The well placed and thought out electronic textures add a new dimension to their sound (I'm looking forward to hearing something new every time I listen to it), the bass tones are diverse and fantastic (an audible, clear Jeremy? There's a first!) The drum sounds are full and clear, and it's great to see the guitar riffs take a bit of a back seat to the melody for a change. You can hear the joy and freedom in Hayley's vocal tracks, rather than the feel of dishevelment and disappointment in past recordings.

Even Rob C didn't really manage to bring out the youthful excitement and energy on the last lot of sessions, and I've been a Cavallo fan for a long time! Well done. By the way, at what point during the taping of "Still into you" did you think to yourself "CHA-CHING!" Haha. I can see that song being played at every single Prom and young couples' weddings for the next decade!

Really, that just totally made my day. It was a challenging record, but we kept our eye on the prize and are all really happy with the net result.

I listened once between sessions today and then took a drive and listened in my car (always the preferred listening environment for me at least) and Paramore is fantastic. Like laughing out loud at particular moments of happiness fantastic!!

And then it occurred to me: I'd say at least half of the records that have been favorite listens, inspirations, and game changers for me in the last year+ have been your productions, man!! I'm not trying to shine you up too too much although you deserve it, but well done.

The Paramore record overall is great, and Jeremy is finally getting to branch out from "behind the wall of guitars" according to his spot on Bassplayer.com. Did he pretty much use the Gibby on the entire record? I saw their SXSW performance and he was rocking it save for "Misery Business" where he used that off-shaped Jazz as the closer.

Anyway, the recorded tone is simply stellar, but coming from you that's no surprise and actually for such a pop band, he's always sounded great. I was reading in that article he uses EB Slinkies .65-.130 though?? Man I know they tune down some but that's a lot of "up tuning!"

Yes, Jeremy does use those gauges. It's a mighty sound, but man oh MAN does it create some tuning/intonation issues. I really had to be meticulous about the micro-tuning, sometimes even section by section in a song.

I've been listening to it non-stop since last week. I think those comparisons are accurate, quite honestly. It's been keeping me awake at night the last couple of days lol.
I have to quit listening to and playing along with it sooner before bed...

I'm very glad about that! All of that attention to detail and nuance and atmosphere was baked into that record from day one. It thrills me to see personal accounts of a record resonating as intended!

I'm loving the album, listening to it at the moment in the office on Spotify just waiting for the vinyl release and then I'll get it bought, because I'm all hipster cool

tivo'd the Jimmy Kimmel thing and loved m83 live. JMJ rockin a synth bass? Looked like a daphne blue P with an ampeg fridge...couldn't tell the head..I really like the sountrack song and plan on downloading it..thanks for a great performance!
