I searched and could not find a thread on the brilliant playing of the Fatback Band's Johnny 'Flip' Flippin. This is a video on the history of the first recorded hip hop single, the amazing multi-bass line that drives it, and how it never quite beat out "Rapper's Delight" in the end.

I absolutely remember the Fatback Band and "King Tim III". We wore out their "Hot Box" album in 1980, especially the tracks "Backstrokin'" and "Love Spell."

I kept trying to tell people that "King Tim III" came out before "Rapper's Delight."

My favorite bass player of all time! Just yesterday, I was playing along with the whole Fatback Band's Keep On Steppin' CD. His timing, use of open strings on a run, chords, and cool bass tone are so great on that album. A few of his bass lines on Keep On Steppin' seem simple, but play along with them to feel firsthand his genius playing. If I were to suggest only one song from the album to listen to it would be the song Love.
