I had not seen this mentioned, so here it is. Johnny Otis, the great "black" musician died yesterday at 90. I say "black" because he was ethnically Greek, but he passed for black most of his adult life.

I remember an interview with him after a riot in his neighborhood, when the interviewer suggested that perhaps it might have been safer for him (the white guy) to have left the area. Mr. Otis informed him that those people, were his people, and he wasn't going anywhere. Caught his act a few times. Good band leader and cool guy....
