How about putting a P pickup in place of the bridge pickup? This is one of the more thicker sounding Jazzes I've ever heard.

The thing is - the tone I have is perfect for many things and I don't want to change it. I can only add something to the guitar, not change anything, because I'd be more likely to ruin something. Anything I'd add to the guitar would be sort of an 'extra' to boost this range.

I would go with a series/parallel push/pull switch. I put mine in the bridge volume position and wire it so the neck volume knob controls both pickups when in series. No visible mods and relatively cheap, even if you have to hire the soldering out. I use it for the situation you described with the hoped for results of filling the low mid spectrum at the flip of a switch.
