George, I'd love to hear some of the Transylvanian Folk music you play, is there any music online you can show me?

Sorry if I missed it earlier in this thread. I love the 3-string bass, it's very cool. I am getting more and more into Baltic and Gypsy music and would like to hear your stuff.

A question about plans was asked earlier. Peter Chandler had plans available. I think they are still available through Luscombe Violins in Canada. They have graduations included on the plan, but I don't know how accurate the plans are. Maybe one of the more experianced luthiers can comment on them?

they are fine, as good as you will find anywhere really.

The graduations are only a starting point and don't mean all that much. I don't think PC measured all the bass tops, I think he says he used the same grads that he took off the Busan bass for all the models. Measuring good graduation maps is not easy without a hacklinger guage; duplicating them on another top is even harder!!!

Well gypsy music is all over the place genre-wise. For Transylvanian "tanchaz" music, where this type of bass is used, go to youtube and look up things like "tanchaz", "magyarpalatka", and "szaszcsavas" (one of my favorites) - that will give you some good examples. The hungarian and romanian folk music typically sees a regular 4-string double bass. The transylvanian folk music is kind of specific, with soma balkan influences, but not necessarily balkan per se.

I just received the pegs today! AWESOME! Thanks a million! I can now see what you and Matthew were talking about, in terms of aesthetics. There is no comparisson between these and my converted bass guitar tuners.

These hat pegs have a very cool old school look to them, they're much more massive etc. It will take some planning in order to install them - I'm not near my bass now so I can't tell right away how much work it will be to install these babies (hole spacing etc). But one sure thing is: it will be well worth the effort!

Thank you and thank to the gentleman who provided these - I'd like to send him a note if possible. Can I get his info?

It might take some time to install these (meaning: not tonight or tomorrow :) ), but I'll be sure to take photos when I'm done and report back.

I'm keeping that option open, definitely. Steel strings are attractive. The only challenge, my pegbox is a bit shallower than [I think] most, and these plates look a bit bigger - but I'll make it happen. I just looked at the existing holes, and they just need to be enlarged.

The pegs were compliments of my old buddy Dick Kolacny. We go way back, doing bass stuff for some 50 years. He, his family and members of the staff have been supportive of my career throughout all those years. When my Hornsteiner bass was in the devastating fire at "Herb's Bar" in Minneapolis in the early 60's, when I was there with Buddy DeFranco (and Pat Moran of Scott LaFaro fame) that bass was restored by this shop. It sounded better after and was the one I played with Bill Evans (See my Avatar pic, above).

You need three.....that's all he had. Perfecto......

Thanks once again Paul. This was a huge favor on your part and on Mr. Kolacny's. Considering the fact that I just slapped a few pictures of my creation online and the fact that I'm totally new to double basses with not much of an experience playing or building, this was a big gift, and you can be sure I'll put those pegs to good use!

I just put those pegs next to my peghead for comparison, and it was an obvious "oh yeah!" moment.
