Just got back from Ishibashi!!!! Pics inside

Have you been to the 2nd hand shops in Akihabara??
My wife and I are planning a trip to Japan next fall and Akihabara looks like the mother-lode as far as used instruments...
We're thinking of staying in Shinjuku, anything there???

There's probably a lot of them around that haven't been played much. I know several music stores in my area that had them and all they did was hang on the wall. Nobody played them. I like them now, but back then I didn't. It was like the anti-sunburst! :D

:confused: Hey dabber (or anyone else ;)), what does "the mother-lode" mean, please?

I've seen that phrase three times today and I have no clue what it means :p.

I have some mates touring Japan from next week. I think they're going to have a ball going guitar and bass shopping in Tokyo. One of them is an experienced Japan traveller so they sould come back with some great new gear.

All those shops you're referring to are in Ochanomizu, which is right next to Akihabara.

If you're staying in Shinjuku there's no need to go any further than Shinjuku, Shibuya and Ikebukuro, all of which are on the Saikyo train line, which is much faster than the Yamanote since it doesn't stop at all the stations you don't need.

If you're much of a walker you can actually walk to all three locations by staying on the Meiji Dori, one of the major arterials on the west side of the Tokyo metropolis.

I never keep track of the names of a lot of the stores I go to but in Ikebukuro there are 4 major stores, 4 in Shibuya and 3 in Shinjuku.

Ikebe, Ishibashi, Kurosawa and Key are some of my favorites.

There's live music every night with no cover charge at What The Dickens, which is about a 5 minute walk from Ebisu station, the next stop after Shibuya.

If you do decide you want to fight the crowds in Ochanomizu then you'll want to catch the orange marked Chuo line from Shinjuku and not the yellow one which stops at 8 stations by the time you arrive, instead of 3.

Shibuya station is where everyone meets by the dog statue , right? I have been there once. I spent most of my time in Japan in Otsu. There are some great music stores in Osaka as well. Like Miki Musical Instruments Co. last time I was there was 3 years ago. I am way over due for another stay!!!

If I have to go to Ochanomizu at night, is it pretty much a safe place? Unfamiliar/foreign/big city/common sense being applied, would it be alright for my wife and I to hop over after an early dinner and get in some shopping?

Thanks to all of the posters in this thread, thanks for the GAS...

Some reality has entered into my Tokyo GAS dreams, not quite the budget or time to shop I had originally thought so my list for something 'special' from Tokyo have been shortened.

Any thoughts on the Fender Japan 62's? 75's?
Is the Fender Japan mojo still present?
Has anyone played a 62-wal, Walnut finished Jazz?

I guess what I'm trying to get help with is this:
Should I be looking at anything other than Fender Japan stuff while I'm there? Any other Japanese exclusive makes/models I should check out?
I prefer jazz necks for 4's with an under/up to a grand budget. I would like a 5 string but I'm realistic about the price limitations & my expectations for a bass. Any other brands with non-export models worth mentioning? I may have to give up a sweet but totally underused fretless '77 Fender P if I pick up a good passive J or surprising 5 stringer.
Or should I just roll the dice and hit a few of the used stores in Ochanomizu?
OR, should I just window shop and keep the P?

Opinions, please, throw them out...

This is a very small part of my trip so if I can attack it with a focused 'hunting list' with the top few picks that are worth my time(/in my budget) I might be able to have a totally killer vacation AND pick up a cool keepsake in the process without taking too much time or stress. My wife is way cool, but all wives have their limits.

Defnitely okay to be in Ochanomizu at night and if you can also go to the music stores in Shibuya and Shinjuku.

If you go to Ishibashi in Shinjuku they have a premium item floor up top.

How long will you be in Japan? I'll be there in a few weeks myself and am always open for guiding, especially if there's music stores on the schedule! :p

Either way, have a great time while you're there. :)
