Just how different is playing fanned frets?

Not much different at all actually. Visually it's a little wierd, but it's not really any different than a std bass. If anything it's a little more ergonomic in the mid and lower neck region. The upper register above about the 14th fret was a little different due to the angle of the frets but took no time to get used to. Switching back and forth between basses wasn't an issue.
 
I was at GC yesterday and they had just gotten a used Dingwall Super Jazz in. I have wanted to play one since I first saw one so I plugged it in and it was one of the most comfortable bass I've ever played. I had never played a fanned fret before and it took absolutely no time to get used to
