Double Bass Just the right rig for tonight. I hope. And I can't wait.

It's nice to have a variety of gear available. Different rooms, different bands, different moods (mine).

Tonight and tomorrow I have two rather challenging rooms but I'm looking forward to both of them. Tonight is a rather loud room with a quartet plus a vocalist. Tomorrow is my regular bi-weekly gig in a somewhat loud, and very reverberant room.

When I'm in ideal conditions (quiet room, with enough damping to remove boominess) I love to play just using my Xlson mic. In less than ideal settings, I am finding that not only are the nuances of the microphone wasted but are actually counterproductive.

I have come to the conclusion that it may be worth it to lug some larger gear on occasion. I'm finding myself spoiled by playing my 7/8 carved bass. I'm sure there are some monster 3/4 basses (I'd love to have one) but my 3/4 bass just doesn't match the sweet fullness of the 'big bass'. I just put my new set of Perps on yesterday and the bass is a joy to play and to hear.

Likewise, instead of my Genzler amp (which I use with the microphone), I am going to bring my GenzBenz 6.2 Shuttle and my GK Neo 12 tonight and tomorrow. That 'combo' really sounds rich and just nails the low notes with a big phat sound that you feel as well as hear. (cue Tim Taylor:

What cabinet I use for a gig, depends on the acoustics, size of a particular room and the size of band.. Unless the gig is outside I use either of my powered MAS 1/8's.
Sounds like you're making the appropriate choice for room and band at tonight's gig. Enjoy the gig.

I loved the sound of my GK Neo 112 and genz Benz shuttle 3.0 together. I thought they complemented each other really well. I'm sure that rig is going to sound great. Have fun!

If I ever have to play louder (or fill a larger space) than I can with the GK Neo 112 and the 6.2 Shuttle then the house is going to have to provide some serious house sound. I once played a large outdoor venue and our amps were basically our stage monitors. There was a whole bank of huge speakers situated above the stage and a professional sound engineer. Incredible sound. I could get used to that.
