JV Jazz bass...with a warped neck

Hello all,

I bought a 1983 JV Squier jazz bass from a TBer (who shall remain unnamed) and when I received it I was disappointed to see that the neck has a bad warp in it from a knot behind the 12th fret. I notified the seller, who claims he had no idea (I won't get into that here), and long story short, he couldn't take the bass back but would refund me almost half of what I paid. I'm not very happy with how the transaction finished up, but at least he did give me a partial refund. Anyways, I'm stuck with a bass that sounds great (mostly) but will never play that well, that nobody wants locally (I've tried to sell it on FB and craigslist noting that the neck is not in good shape). So, attached are some photos, and I guess I'm putting feelers out there to see if anyone wants the body for a project, or has a neck (preferably a MIJ from that era, or an older fender neck) that could go on this bass to make it something I'd like to hang onto.

SOLD - 1983 Squier JV SN# jazz bass *CANADIAN SALE*

You can see the knot in the original listing. If you pay by paypal the correct path is opening a dispute if it's not as described. That said you accepted a partial for around $400 (unless you paid less than asking) which should be WAY enough to replace or fix that neck. Honestly with that amount of dough and a rosewood board I would get it refreted and the fretboard fixed.

I asked a local luthier about replaning and refretting the fingerboard. He quoted me $500-$600 and offered no guarantee that it wouldn't go back to warped because of the knot in the neck. Also, good eye on the previous listing. I hadn't noticed the knot in those photos. I wish I had...would've never bought the bass.

Warp was not in the description. I told him I wanted a refund as the bass was not as described. He wasn't having it and claims he had no idea of the warp. A partial refund was the next best thing. He tried to offer me a bunch of other items he was planning on selling...for me to sell to make back some money.. a true nightmare scenario.

I know that I could find a jazz bass neck just about anywhere and make this bass work, but the reason I spent $800 on a 1983 JV serial MIJ Jazz Bass is that a JV Jazz bass is what I had been looking for. So to put a MIM neck, or a Warmoth neck on the body would completely negate the reason I bought the bass. If someone out there had a Squier Jazz neck from that era for sale I'd swipe it up in a heartbeat. They are just hard to come by.

So the original listing was for more than the price of an American standard in today’s used market. Damn. Remove the squier logo and put it on an American neck lol.

Seriously though good luck with sorting it out. Good on you for not passing the problem off to someone else. It was good for the seller to give you the partial refund and reach a resolution you both agreed on.

I paid via PayPal but did not open a claim. I asked for my money back and he said he couldn't...so he offered me $500, which is what my local luthier said it would cost to replane and refret the fingerboard. I accepted his offer then he sent me $380. Problem is, I sent it with the no-fee option (he mentioned vet bills, I sympathized and offered Venmo, which I learned he couldn't do because Canada/USA transaction so I thought I was being a nice guy by saving him the PayPal fee - never doing that again...) so I don't think I could have opened a claim. Then when he sent me a refund, he charged me a fee. Whaddaguy....

I often forget that here in Nashville I have access to many great techs, and not everyone is that fortunate around the country. But I'd be very surprised if that's not fixable, IF you have access to a very good repairman. These types of things often happen to basses that have never been maintained, and a 1983-production instrument could certainly be in that description. I'd be surprised though, if one visit would do it; a 'bass chiropractor' would have to get that first big jump back into line and several follow-ups as it tries to go back to the shape it's held for so long.

And it might be worth it IF this is one of those early 80's Squiers that resulted when the newly-reorganized Fender bought out the Greco/ FGG production and sold it under the Squier logo. Those were awesome instruments that were the first step in the re-building of Fender under the Shultz regime. Hard to imagine they sold for $189 MSRP in those days.

Only you can decide what it's worth to you and how to proceed, but I still think in the right hands it's serviceable.

Yeah the gift payment removes any protections you might have had. And he didn't do a "refund" if you got charged you a fee he made a payment to you. The issue with doing it the way he did it is now he has a payment to you that is "for goods". He can turn around and say he never received the item (which is true) and paypal will give him the $380 back. Everything he did is shady.

I will throw this out here:

"NO FEE" --> THREAD DELETED | "NO FEE" in PM -> BANNED

That seller 100% violated the talkbass rules by asking for a fee free payment.

The rules state the mods won't step in if you use the "gift" option through Paypal. Since you were paid back without the "gift" option and are still owed $120, you could contact the mods and see if this counts as a scam. You may still get an infraction for using the "gift" option in the first place. At the least, please leave appropriate feedback. Nothing really happens to the offenders, some members will ignore the fact you were wronged but some of us view TB as a community and we don't care to do business with offenders.
