Double Bass K & K and Krivo combination :)

Hello people!

Yesterday, i ordered an EUB at a local luthier! Its sorta copy of eminence bass, though more clean-line, it will be carved flamed maple, ebony fingerboard, etc etc. Now, i am in the state of choosing the right pickup combination for it...

I decided to use magnetic/piezzo combination, so here are my candidates:

K & K Bass max pickup

+

Krivo magnetic pickup ( from jflojazz or sth like that, member on forumm)

+

K & K K&K DUAL CHANNEL PRO PREAMP

What do you think about this combination? Ive read all the threads on forum, but i still cannot decide... Im going mostly pizzicato, actually no bow, at least for now, Playin different styles of music. I need warm, round tone.

THanks for your advices

Well, you have the external volumes, but the K&K preamps also have an internal volume trimmer for each channel, on the inside along with the EQ trimmers.

I recommend that players using any combination of gear with those preamps use the internal gain controls to balance the two pickups so that the volume is the same with each when the external volume controls are in the same position. That way you can visually set the balance or make familiar changes for different needs. Do the EQ adjustments, first, (very small changes at a time, the EQ is very powerful) and then adjust the internal gain controls. I'd suggest starting the Bass Max at nearly 0 (counter-clockwise) because it can be pretty hot.

I use one of the K&K two channel preamps with my homebuilt EUB; it also has a piezo and magnetic pickup.

So, thats it..... IS there anything else i should know? Which pickup to choose for acoustic body, like eminence bass? IS bassmax ok? OR even realist or full circle? Im going with pizzicato only. Need balanced warm tone.

Depends on the bridge size and design. If it is a "normal" URB bridge with the usual proportions, a Bass Max will be fine. However, if it is shorter than, say 5.5 inches, that could be insufficient wood to diffuse the sound by the time it reaches the wing, so a wing pickup would favor the strings on that side. The Realist needs a nicely reactive body for the best sound, so if the body wood is thin enough it could be a good choice. It may, however, feed back more readily than the other two choices. The Full Circle is an excellent pickup IMHO, too, and should be considered.

My vote would be the Realist. Call David Gage and order the Eminence version of the pickup. It will sound the warmest and fullest. And it blends well with the magnetic pu.

There no longer is an Eminence version. They have all been the same for about three years now.
