Would attaching some felt, or soft foam to the side of the pickup elements that aren't attached to the bridge possibly reduce feedback? When I had a Palatino EUB I put foam sheets under the pickup and between the pickup and bridge, and though it wasn't true upright sound, it worked well, but not to prevent feedback
