I dig Kai for sure, but I'm still waiting for something that "breaks him" to me as player. My first experiences with Kai's music were not the best, I bought his solo album and a Billy Cobham live album that feautred him. The Cobham album had a few great moments, but his solo album was a bit lacklustre. I could tell the guy could play, I just needed to hear him in a setting that was musical dynamite!

Then I heard his playing on John McLaughlin's "Que Alegria". Even though he only did a couple tracks he was incredible! Especially on "One Nite Stand", he just lets rip with that huge grooving bassline! Very good stuff, and I've no doubt Kai is an excellent player!

You have checked out JM's Live at the Royal Festival Hall, right? Lots of Kai to dig into on that one..

That JM album s pure genius! Between Johnny Mac himself, Trilok Gurtu pulling every imaginable percussion sound out of the hat and of course, Kai laying it down with ferociously speedy running bass, in the pocket slapping and beautiful lyrical fretless. he really added to that trio's sound.

These days, Kai is playing with Garaj Mahal who are very cool!

IMO... one of the great electric bass performances of all time.... actually, one of the greatest performances of all time in the 'post fusion' genre IMHO. That disc is stunning in every way.

At the other end of the spectrum, the Garaj Mahal stuff is fun... he grooves hard. Their cover of Material Girl is funny and awesome at the same time. And of course, what's not to like about 'Poodle Factory':D

We threw a festival two weeks ago, GM rocked. Not as hard as they usually do tho, they had a replacement drummer, and while phenomenal, he didn't have all the structure down so it was a little loose for teh supergroup they are. Nevertheless, here are a few pics.

Kai is an absolute monster. I have been studying with him for almost 2 years on and off. Real great cat with an amazing perspective on musicality as a whole... IMO one of the greats in the realm of fretless playing. Guy has it down. One of the best teachers I have ever had tutelage under.
