Did you try putting an "E" string in that position and tuning it to "A"? (I guess it's possible that you could have 2 bad "A" strings.)

Also try tilting the bridge (very!) slightly towards the fingerboard and then towards the tailpiece. I once had a buzz (Bb) that turned out to be a bridge fit problem.

Don't uptune a E to an A ever!
Chances are really high that the string will break and it isn't good for your instrument either.

Tension would be 225% of the regular string tension which means the pressure on the top will grow that much as well for this string. It also gets highly unbalanced since the bass side bridge foot takes all that additional pressure.

Downtuning a D is not so much better (except the string doesn't break and the pressure is lower), since you get about 50% of the normal tension if you downtune by a perfect fourth.
