Keeping Di'd clean guitars in your mixes

Hey Justin! I know i know, shame one me for asking a guitar related question, but i remember you mention somewhere (i think pensados place?) About how you keep a clean guitar DI centred in the mix and pan the either distored or effected guitars pretty wide. I'm looking at maybe trying this technique (really loved your guitar work in "hurry up we're dreaming"). Any tips? How loud would you set those DI's levels to the main mic'd amp signal?

That very specific panning trick is something I've used only a few times, when circumstances permitted. But otherwise, I love to use a DI as a parallel process to many of my amped sounds. Try very heavy compression with medium attack, and different types of plug saturation. After the saturation, try some chorus, even if the main amp'ed guitar had none. Or a very specific reverb. Or a quick slap. Then, try leaning that over a little onto one side, away from the main amp'ed guitar. Infinite fun.
