I keep my hands clean, never roll the tone control off and once a month or so wipe the strings down with a cloth barely damp with alcohol. My gig last night was using a single coil P that still has the factory 2006 strings on it. They still sound great.
WD-40 Mostly aliphatic hydrocarbons I think. Not really something for cleaning.
It is a solvent for the most part, but also a lubricant that leaves a residue.WD-40 is a fantastic cleaner--I use it in my shop all the time. I don't know the chemistry, but it acts like a really strong solvent except that it does not seem to harm surfaces--even painted surfaces. It can remove all kinds of nasty stuff, even things like gasket sealant and tree sap. Never though about using it for strings, but I may have to try it.
And i think i have to join a band with kids from xavier school because of my hand so corrosiveThis.
I also am lucky that my body chemistry is not very oily and corrosive.

The other way to save strings is to have many bases and always swap which bass you play. Down side is one day you will be buying a lot of strings! My family has the best method for keeping my roundwounds clean and fresh: they keep me busy so I have no time for playing my bass at home. ;-)
