My dear sweet GOD! I cannot fathom how we're on page 3 of this thread and no one, absolutely nobody, has mentioned, the greatest bass player of all time....

Most of my suggestions have been taken so I'll suggest:
The bassist for Cake(i cant remember his name)
Stephen Lessard of The Dave Matthews Band
Omar Rodriguez of Defacto
Hub of The Roots
Joe Lally of Fugazi
Tony Kanal of No Doubt
None of these guys are virtuosos but I dig their style.

CAKE basslines rock, however no two CD's are the same guy. They go thru bassists like beer thru my blatter!

I actually think fieldy is pretty good, (in reference to a previous post) his style, sound and tone is pretty unique.
Any Jaco Pastorius, Victor Wooten, Les Claypool and Marcus Miller song will more than likely make your jaw hit the floor.
Aother couple of great bassists IMO:
Scott Thunes (later Zappa)
Bryan Beller (Beer for Dolphins, etc.)
Both of them are pretty much tools of the composer (they don't generally do a lot of solo stuff) but they have to play the most god-awful complicated stuff and make it look easy. Worth checking out...

OK.. Cliff may be your favourite bassplayer of all time, but let's get something clear:
STU Hamm does not play in primus (Les Claypool does. Stuart Hamm plays with Joe Satriani, he has played with Steve Vai, and is a solo bassist.
And you have some serious spelling problems.

maybe this should go in the "most under-rated bass player" thread, but I think that Skuli Sverrison is one of the most talented guys out there. His tone is amazing, his time is unfaltering, and he has ridiculous solo chops which never overlap the song. Check him out on Ben Monder's "Excavation", Track No. 3 bass solo.
Boy, old thread, not to repeat any greats already listed so I'll leave mine at Andrew Weiss(Rollins, Gone, Ween), he can solo out & jump right back into the groove like he was never there! Killer sound too...
