Killer Dagger - pickups vs. body?

Hi all, I have a Killer Dagger (pretty unknown brand outside of Japan) with Basswood body. I absolutely love how it plays and it sounds pretty decent (I put some Villex pickups in them) but I notice some oomph and character missing that I get from my swamp ash basses. Is there a way to make it sound more phat with active PUs or will it need a better body to achieve that? Any suggestions on PUs that fatten the sound maybe?
