Yeah i can see what you mean, I mean i have a fairly sturdy bag back home that is for all intents and purposes a laptop bag but never ever used, and the laptop is long gone, but its a fairly big one, so my idea is to get some wood thats been in our garage for agesss.
Cut two triangle pieces yadda yadda and then some paint, and boom. my own free pedal board with transport case, and then track down some velcro mat to put on it. And some dragon decals to spray on the sides and back of it... Yay to Dragons ^^.

I built my own several years ago. No pix, however. I set up my pedals on a piece of cardboard and traced around them while connected up together with power supplies. I used that template to cut my top out, then built the rest of the box, including cover. Painted the whole thing red, with nice gold coloured hardware. Worked great. Sold it all later after getting a Yamaha FX500B unit.

I bought an old suitcase from a thrift store and cute a price of ply wood to fit inside it. They way it worked can't remember now if it was the kind I found but the bottom piece detached so you would open it and the bottom piece with the pedals would come out and when it was closed the top would fit pretty tight to keep my pedals from moving around and kept everything safe.
