Ok so I currently only have a downloaded version of this DVD, but I am planning to buy a proper copy asap.

First off the set recorded in Japan (the one I have) is ruddy amazing, King Crimson have been a bit of a 'grower' band for me & after watching this, well; I'm pretty much gobsmacked. I've been watching it day after day. Sometimes watching music this good just pisses me off because I know I'll never, ever be that good. ;) A bit like going to watch the Mars Volta when Jon Theodore was playing for them.

Anyway, the reason I'm posting this...

I'd like anyone who knows much about Trey Gunn to list info about his effects used on this set.

I know he used Warr Guitars & those mental MIDI triggers in the encore but after that I'm clueless as to what he's using...

Or if you haven't watched this, do! The whole band is literally dripping in effects.

Well, it's hard to say with Trey. I recall him using two of the old kidney shaped Line6 Pods, plus some rack stuff, a Roland synth unit and a heck of a lot of midi control. Specifically, from stage glimpses, I gather that he's using a GR-33 and a Rocktron floor switcher unit, probably with a switchblade. No idea on what rack though.

I have no idea what sampler he uses, but it has to be midi triggered. I think he listed it on his site, but I could never find it elsewhere. Sad, cause I'd love one.

Anyway, you'd better get Deja Vroom. While the Triple Double doesn't work as well as a band, Tony Levin and Bill Brufard are far better than their compatriots/replacements.

Thanks Swimming Bird, thats some useful info, I do plan to get Deja Vroom as well. Must say for me that set will take some beating though!

So does anyone one else have anything to say about this DVD or King Crimson's bass/stick/warr players effectwise?

Deja Vrooom and Eyes Wide Open are both great DVDs, but I can't help with the effects.

Bruford is one of my favourite drummers but after witnessing Mastelotto in concert with a great view, I quickly realized Bruford's throne is very well occupied. That dude is an absolute machine. Well, they both are really, but masters of two very distinctive styles, so much so that I'm not sure I could choose a favourite between them anymore.

Gunn and Levin don't even play the same instrument, it isn't fair to compare. :D

+1 to that. I can't get over how good his control of electronic drums with accoustic is. Awesome to hear really. Not OTT in anyway which I think is why I like it so much.

Don't suppose you know anything about those electronic drum/percussion pads that both Pat M & Adrien B used on the extended Power to believe track? (Eyes Wide Open Japan set)

i have a VHS of Crimson in Japan with bruford, gunn, fripp, belew, levin and mastellato

speaking of mindmelting i saw Dysrhythmia tonight - ****ing slaughtered it! new songs rule!

Heh, sorry if it sounded like I was digging on their skill -- it's their musical choices I tend to disagree with, though both are amazing players. In my mind, the old school guys (Levin, Bruford) have a lot more taste.

Either guitar geek or Trey's site also says he uses the Bass Micro Synth. I love that almost squeaky fuzz sound he gets on the tune Electrik. I wonder if that's partly from the square wave on the BMS. Those guys are all amazing. Bruford is probably my favorite drummer, he's certainly the one I've listened to the most, but Mastelotto is pretty sick. Wetton, Levin, and Gunn are just 3 different varieties of awesome but I can't really imagine Wetton fitting in the last 3 incarnations of KC.

I'm sorry..but I have to disagree.. the man isn't a patch on Brufford.. Brufford just has it, Masteletto doesn't come near..

but as for that dvd it's amazing, I love the hereos encore on disk two and also the one with Belew and his guitar and three of a perfect pair:D

I got this from an old bassplayer issue (June 2002)

The Warr guitar feed into a Sound Sculpture Switchblade 16 switching system, controlled by a Rocktron All Access pedalboard.
All the effect are on the Sound Sculpture loops :
ART SGE Mach 2 distorsion
EHX bass microsynth
Roland Gr-30 guitar synth
T.C. electronic G-Force Unit

The "bass" side also has :
Bass Pod (run in parallel with the dry signal)
Line 6 DL-4 delay pedal
Line 6 FM4 filter modeler
EBS octabass

Guitar side :
Guitar Pod
Volume pedal


The bass side returns to the rack through Euphonic preamp, then
a DBX 160 compressor to a Euphonic power amp and 2 euphonic 3X10 speakers.
The guitar side goes to 2 iAmp 600 1X10 combo.

Also, on the picture, I clearly see an Echoplex, a peavey power amp and a QSC PLX power amp.

To be honest, I haven't paid much attention to Trey's tone up until now. I gotta say, as corny as his playing can be, his sounds are well sculpted. I guess that's the benefit of having a Rocktron All-Access is that you can have a lot of conistent tones that can subtley change over a song.

All of his tones are probably a combo of the kidneys and G-Force, because those are the easiest to control via patches.

As for Elektrik, I hear what could be a BMS, but if so it's being used for an octave doubling effect + compression (via the filter and maybe attack controls) and a little drive. The amount of drive/distortion seems to change over the course of the song, but that could be coming from any number of things.

EDIT: how does Belew get that vocal effect on Happy With What You Have to Be Happy With?
