Double Bass Kolstein Flight Case Help

Seeking advice from the road warriors out there. We (my son & I) will be flying (Southwest) with his bass later this week. We own a Kolstein flight case which we acquired 2nd hand (in great shape) and in watching the video on the Kolstein web site they show packing the bass out of the bag, and then laying the bag on top prior to closing up the flight case. I would have thought the bass inside the bag would offer additional protection, to at least the finish, while in transit.

Anyone have experience flying with the Kolstein case who might share their experience to help make this a successful experience for a young bassist? Would you recommend we have the bass in or out of the bag (a Mooradian) when packed in the Kolstein flight case?

Thanks for the help.

The Kolstein case has air bags, (basically heavy Duty ballons)
that you pump up to hold the bass snugly in Place. You don't need the soft case, and I don't know if the Mooridian would even fit. The Trunk isn't really made for that. I would, however reccomend putting a towel or thin blanket down where the straps will make contact with the instrument, to prevent scratches or wear marks. If the Kolstein case is in good condiyion, it is one of the safest ways to transport an instrument. I have done several tours with them.
