hi all, I can't seem to get the drop d piece on my ex factor to stay open. It only opens to maybe 30 degrees. Thanks for any input!

Kubicki ex factor problem

Lift the D-capo with your thumb, bend the string down toward the A string with your finger(s) and release the D-capo to rest (embedded in the fingerboard) under the string. One handed operation once you used to it.
markibass is correct. You're only going to get 35 or 40degrees out of it. Just enough to get the string over or under it.
Weird question. I guess the mechanism is unusual enough that its regular operation isn't necessarily obvious. I wonder why Kubicki never licensed this to anyone? It is an innovative idea that allows drop tuning without different fingerings. It would never be mainstream, but I can certainly see it being a feature on a boutique.
Isn't it very similar to D extensions on uprights? Perhaps it's already patented or otherwise an already "owned" design?
