Between 7 oclock and 9 oclock on the volume knob, if you are playing a note and turning up, my amp lets out this shrill high pitched squeel.

OK, no problem... leave my volume at 2 oclock, let the gain do the work.

Well, now the gain is getting scratchy between 6 and 8 oclock.

dirty pots? bad soldering? what?

Oh, and I do believe now that this is what fried my first avatar cabinet's horn.

Hey Mike, the scratchy stuff sounds like dirty pots. You can try just turning the knob back and forth for awhile, this will allow the contacts inside to make a better conection if it's not too dirty. If that dioesn't doit open up the head and see if the back of the pots are visible, if they are and they have small holes in the back get some tuner cleaner or contact control cleaner from Radio shack and spray in the holes. Don't go crazy you won't need that much. As for the other problem, does it do this with other basses too? Have you tried a different cord? Turn the bass away from the amp when you do this and see if it still happens. Hope that helps.
