The problem is not limited to L1000's. I've seen it on many basses where the truss rod nut was at the headstock. A good tech can fix that so that it's better than new. And it's not a costly fix either.

Nice post Turnaround. Well..there are a few ways to fix the trouble as majority of methods are only a temporary repair. A neck repair specialist w/ proper tools will repair it at a cost to the customer under $100. There is no point to make this into a bigger problem than it really is too be resolved.
You can also wait until G&L starts selling the tribute necks again for $30. Not a US neck, but it will make the bass playable
