La Bella Deep Talkin' Flatwound Short Scale Tension

Please, no flaming! I did a search, I did see a string tension app/program of some kind here recently but I haven't been able to find it. I currently am using D'Addario Chromes but the E-String is a little floppy for me so I want to compare the tension of the Chromes I have with the Deep Talkin' Strings which *seem* like the sound I'm listening for. I was able to find the tension on the Chromes at JustStrings.com but the La Bella's don't have any info in the Tension column.

Can anyone show me where that tension app/program is on this site or, just as well, where I can find the Tension online for the LBFWSC's?

Why don't you just get some fatter strings since physics dictates they'd have to have more tension if they have more mass when stretched out under the same parameters? You should try the La Bella Electric Bass Guitar Deep Talkin' Bass Med. Short Scale, .049 - .109 Stainless Steel Flat Wound, 760FM-S.

I just ordered them--thanks! It'll be a little while though before I'll give a critique because I have metal nut and no file(s) for it plus I haven't had the intonation set by a professional for almost a decade so I'm giving her a birthday present.

Basically this... On your Short Scale, a .105 string is going to have similar tension and feel to that of a .100 on a long scale etc etc... Not exact math there but roughly that is the idea. If you like a 45-105 set or even a 50-110 set on a long scale, do not be afraid to go even higher on a short scale.

Yea, no one seemed inclined to answer so I just answered myself!

I like your solution though--much simpler than finding a damn program and putting in numbers and comparing them. I went big! The set I ordered is:

1st G .049
2nd D .069
3rd A .089
4th E .109

so THAT ought tighten that sucker up! The Chromes I had were:

1st G .045
2nd D .065
3rd A .080
4th E .100

so I like that the La Bella's are a straight shot across the board in diameter, i.e. +0.20 on each string. I don't know yet but it seems like that would make for a smoother transition between strings but we'll find out....
 
I put those fat DTFs on my 30" scale bass, think i'd like a slightly heavier E but it's definitely usable
Picked them because they were one of the biggest short sets I saw

seems like manufacturers weirdly don't always offer their biggest gauges in short scale even though this is where they are most needed
 
ive got the short-Chromes on a hagstrom concord bass, but the strings are held a few inches behind the bridge, so the tension is probably higher than the bass you're playing, if your short scale is more like a fender mustang bass style bridge. i like the tension and sound for Chromes on that bass, but have been wanting to try some labellas out.

Length of strings past the bridge saddle (and past the nut) is irrelevant as far as tension: only the speaking length (nut to bridge) matters.
If anything, on an instrument with a lot of afterlength between bridge and tailpiece (or one with an unusually long headstock, and more distance between nut and tuning posts), strings may actually *feel* a little looser, not tighter, because there's a longer length of string stretching upon the attack. This effect would depend on said length, as well as how easily the string is free to move back and forth across saddle and nut slot, before and after its release.
However, vibrating length being equal, it doesn't matter (when it comes to tension proper i.e. pulling force) if what's to the left and right of it amounts to four inches or forty.

No. Tension is only a function of the pitch and scale length of the given string, from nut to bridge saddle. Nothing above the nut to the tuners nor from the bridge saddle down to the anchor affects tension. Now, since the string may have a different angle over the bridge saddle, that may affect flexibility and feel, but not tension. Read page 3 of the GHS tension guide, and page 4 of the D'Addario tension guide:
