La Bella White Nylon, but...

You’re so welcome! Both my albums are on Spotify via the link in my signature. About half of AB3 (The Red Album) has bass parts with the White Nylons. That includes my bass solo “Rickenbacker 10”. I had Rotosound 55s on my basses for the other half.

I was looking for my main strings during the recording of that album after realizing how bad Rotosound is. I have since found D’Addario Chromes (for flats) and XL nickeks (for rounds). Those are on the new album.

What strings sound like the white nylon, but are higher tension.

Just put a set on my fretless P and daaaaayymmmnnnnnn they sound and feel amazing... But if I put it in drop D they are extremely flubby. I have to be extremely careful not to hit them too hard or they rattle like mad.

Just drop D. Not DGCF!

If I ever get a 5 string bass, I would get a 5 string set of White Nylons and tune them to D Standard (with a high A#) because their tension is so low. I would even do that now if La Bella sold 4 string BEAD sets.

In the OP's case, I would get the 5-string standard gauge (760T-B; gauges 060-070-094-115-135), ditch the E, tune the B up to D.
In case you're wary of modifying the nut, knock it out, put it away, put a new one in, carve away.

I have no idea how to change a nut! That sounds both easy and scary

The're usually only held in place by a wee dab of glue; keeping the neck stable against something, and a (one) light hit to either the bass or treble side of the nut with a hammer and screwdriver should be enough to take it off.
I totally understand wanting to keep the original alone (it is a fretless, after all, I guess it's dialed right where you want it), so a spare one for the experiment, since you do like the White Nylons, seems like a sensible idea.

Actually, at that point you could spend some tome comparing two sets,
- the light A D and G you already have, augmented with the 115 (I didn't mean you should literally ditch it!)
- and the rest of the standard-gauge, 5-string set, with the uptuned B, as I said above,
and see which one works best.

My plan was just to just buy the heavier set and see what happens. Now I may that with the 5!

The nut thing is tempting. But it's a new to me 79 P and I'm very nervous of any mods requiring me to hit the bass with a hammer
