LaBella 760FS vs Rotosound RS77LD

I like a nice, warm, thumpy old-school sound on my PJ bass. What can you tell me about comparing and contrasting these two strings? I currently am running RS77s and don't mind the sound, but they are a little 'twangy' at the top end...is it worth the experimentation to try some Deep Talkin' LaBellas?

You can also try the GHS Precision Flats for "woody warmth".

The 760FL or 760FX should have better balance tension-wise. The 760FX is very light gauge, so it shouldn't be any harder to play than normal roundwounds.
Roto 77 is a weird breed: to me it's closest to D'Addario Half Rounds, in tone, feel, and even the subdued output. It's a classic British rock sound like Roger Waters and John Deacon, but I find the La Bella more versatile. Here the SM77 is the lighter gauge that plays like normal roundwounds.

^This^. I've used all of them, and still use the La Bella's and the GHS P-Flats. On several basses, both long, medium and short scale. I had the Roto's on my'78 P-Bass for several years; if I didn't want the sound of the original factory Squier flats (which I can get from the #3025 GHS P-Flats), it would still be wearing the Roto's. My '18 Gibson T-Bird wore them, too. If I hadn't sold the bass (which I regret doing; lefty T-Birds are pretty rare), I would be playing them now. They really do deserve the "bridge cable" nickname, but I've been playing stiff flats for a long, long time, so...

Match gauges unless you are prepared for a nut fitting... that doesn't sound like it's too big of a problem except that lately there's been inordinate amount of time between putting an instrument into a tech shop and getting it back for the simplest of set up stuff... we're talking like 4 months backlog.

IIRC the LaBella '54's are heavy gauge at .110 on the E. Most Medium's are .105 Lights are around .96 get ahold of a caliper and make sure if you don't already know.

I like the 760FL's on my P bass. I had TI flats on it but as much as I liked the sound it just didn't feel right for most things. I am lovin' the 760FL's feel and sound. I have Dunlop flats on my 5 string. I like those as well. Might go back to rounds there though.
