LaBella LTF-4A Low Tension Flat love thread

I have a set coming to me on Monday. I have a Fender AVRI '75 jazz reissue (ash body, rosewood fingerboard), and with the TIs I have on it, it is quite midrangey. It has a great 70's funk/disco burble and pop, and it records really well, but doesn't have enough bottom end ooomph live. I plan to try the LTFs on this and hope to get a bit more bottom end. I go for a vintage sound with tone knob rolled down/off.

It should. I've only had my first LTF set since this weekend, but they're on a P-bass that wore TI flats for many years and even bright and new out of the package I noticed more booty. I'd expect that for your bass and that over time, like most flats, that should continue as they age.

Just installed my first set of these this weekend on a P-bass that’s worn TI flats for years. First impression is very good, they need time to break in of course but they are doing what I expected based on the reviews and I’m happy so far.
That thump they give!! I could immediately “feel” the silk inside the strings, below the outer wrap. They sound like there’s a mute at the bridge, but much better than that! And the silk makes them so much more pliable than like 95% of flats out there.

^^^The reason I don’t play J basses at all.^^^. But, a J can get you their with the right strings, and settings.

I have two other jazz basses - AVRI '62 reissue (alder/rosewood), and they sound deep, full, and chewy. Especially the heavy (10+ lbs) one. That one wears a 20 year old set of 9050 ML flats, and the other wears TIs. They both actually sounded fuller with more bottom than my AV '63 Precision, so I sold that. The Precision also wore TIs. We can make generalizations - and it's fun to do! - but each instrument ultimately is its own beast.

There is also a lot of variables going on live, and he may have issues due to his favorite performance venue. Walls, carpeting (or lack thereof), ceiling height, etc. may change some of this. And that's just the venue. Amps matter too.

What is universal, is that when a Pigeon lands on a sound stage you cannot hear it. Weird huh?

I agree. I’ve been lazy when it comes to J basses, and haven’t taken the time to find the right strings for the few that I’ve owned.
