which one of these basses have the best slap sound the more big agressive sound? Darryl Jones 5 strings with retro joe osborne 5 strings with retro 55-02 55-01 decade i repeat big agressive slap
ok i´ve heard all them to me it´s between darryl jones and 55-02 the 44-01 sample sounds very good to me but jones is really what i want BUT the jones sample is without retro preamp i want to know wich one you guys prefeer and why....
55-02 gets my vote. You can blend the MM and J pickup a little towords the neck boost the mids, and get VERY aggressive slap sounds IMHO
hi man...welll first it was very weird i´m a jazz bass fanatic and this was a big huge change...the nordstrand 4.2 is a little dark just a bit the nj4se on the neck is great sounds like a presicion pickup my bass is loaded with the retro preamp now i love my bass but it took me time to get used to it...it´s a growly beast
i used to have the darryl jones but the 4 strings version with retro i loved it but i was forced to sold it.....very sad....i tried the jones 5 strings also with retro and man that´s another animal, big slap sound 35 scale makes a big difference
Lakland 55-01 and switch the preamp with a Bart NTMB and switch the factory Bart pups for a pair of Nordstrand Big Single pickups.
that´s what a though but my mentor told me this "they are grat awesome fingerstyle sound huge but a little dark for sparkling slap sound jones with retro have more highs" that was he told me i had never heard it but i heard the jones 5 strings aero jazz pickups and i love that sound big singles had better sound?????
It all depends on your idea of a great slap tone. I know for a fact they're a whole lot better than the Bart MK-1's that come with it. My idea of a great slap tone is a nice single coil neck pup tone. You also may be getting the Big Singles mixed up with the Fat Stacks.
The Bartolini NTMB is a darker sounding preamp with muted highs. I had to pull the NTMB out of one of my recent basses due to the poor slap tone. In it's place I put a Demeter but there are others that are great for slap also.
The 55-02 has a great modern slap sound with the LH3 electronics. The JO5 with a maple board could be cool too, but I'd go for a sadowsky pre instead of the retro.
Really? What kind of pickups did you have? I was under the impression that the pickups had more of an effect on overall tone than the preamp. I guess I got lernt!
IMO you were right. My Barto preamps do little to my signal other than buffer the pickups from cable loading ... "opening" and brightening the sound a tiny bit. A good preamp does very little until you start using the EQ, and bartolini makes a very good preamp. An active/passive switch is great for hearing the pre's effect.
