This is originally an active bass, right? Those holes are from the original knobs? Do you still have them? Is there any way to reconnect them to the bass while wired passively?

Yes, it was originally active. It could be made active again, however it was converted to passive before I got it, so I don't have the preamp. It's a killer sounding bass "as is", but would be an easy conversion.

As far as keeping it passive and having more knobs, I'm not sure what you'd want to wire it up as .... maybe volume-tone-volume-tone like a Les Paul, and add a varitone ? That might be one possibility....
