Lakland 55-02 vs Warwick streamer Jazzman 5 ...

Hey folks. I've been looking to trade my ol' P for a hi-Fi 5er and these 2 have come up as options. They both look fantastic and I can't decide b/w the 2. I'm after something which has a lot of tonal options and they both seem to do that. The Jazzman is a 2000 and pretty worn, The Lakky is a few years old but id pristine nick. Finish doesn't bother me but may affect its resale if I ever let it go.

I know the answer is to play both and see which suits me best but I'm after as many opinions as pos before I do.

What would YOU do?

Knowing the guys at Lakland has really biased my opinion. Still after playing other peoples warwicks and playing other peoples Laklands..My desicion was pretty easy to make. The lakland, can get modern but easily gets old school tones. Making her versatile for recording, live, etc. The warwicks are nice but all sounded like warwicks..thin compared to the Lakland. Lakland I think will hold value better too. But thats always market driven.

Wow. Interesting results so far.
I'm a little surprised given that the Woz costs about twice as much. Also- surprising to hear it described as thin. I've always considered it to be a bit of a punchy growl monster.

Quick question for all the Lakland fans- Can you get it to growl like a 'wick? I've always seen them as being a versatile but *polite* bass.

I had a Lakland 55-02. I ended up selling it because while it was a very well-built instrument, it wasn't for me. The neck was too thin (I'd compare it to the sleek Ibanez sized necks) in comparison to the 'wick (enter the obligatory "It's a baseball bat!" comment). I've always found the beefier 'wick necks okay, once you spend five minutes with them, but that's just me.

Tonewise, the Lakland did a lot of stuff, but in the same vein, I was just "meh" about it. It didn't do anything for me, and I really wanted to like the bass. The Jazzman should have a real beefy growl to it, and as already mentioned, will sound like a Warwick.

I agree with Monkey - I had a big 55-02 crush for a long time, but once I got my hands on one I found it to be rather pedestrian. Solid sounds, but not enough character for my taste. Additionally, I was not keen on the neck at all... didn't like the wide, flat shape or the feel at all.

Streamer Jazzman is high on my interest list. IMO the 2-band MEC pre just sounds better somehow than the 2-band, and I like the MEC 'buckers. There are some great clips of the Jazzman on Youtube if you search for them - great sounds.

Streamer Jazzman all the way... I like the sound and playability of my Warwick Streamer Jazzman much better than any Lakland I've played, pretty much for the same reasons as One Bad Monkey.

I've only tried a Warwick once and while the neck didn't bother me a bit I felt the tone was kind of alien to my ear. The 55-02 on the other hand is an extremely versatile instrument, much more similar to the P bass you're used to. I think you could get closer to the Wick's sound with the Lakland than vice verse. Of course I'm clearly biased since I play a 55-02. Yes, it is a tad "polite" compared to a P or my Stingray copy but it suits me fine.

Anything but the Warwick...they haven't made a decent bass since the 90's. ( I should know...had several 80s and 90s models that were fantastic...the newer stuff just does not measure up...down hill since they git rid of the brass adjusta-nut and started making the ROCK line)

The Lakeland ,on the other hand, is a sweet instrument.
