Lakland or Sterling - Some opinions please

Hey all, im looking at getting my first 5 string some time this year. I currently have a MIM Fender jazz (09) and its a really nice bass but im not really getting the kind of tone I want with it. I think to achieve the kind of full tone im after I need to go active instead of passive. I play in a post-hardcore/metalcore band with a pick, I also spend quite a lot of time playing freestyle and a lot of slap at home.

After some research I found that the 2 best basses to fit this bill (band being priority) are the Lakland skyline 55-01 and the Sterling ray 35

The kind of tone im looking for is this kind of tone:



At around 2:48 you'll know what I mean

Any help would be great

I am currently using a GK 700rb ii through the PA system at practice.

I personally prefer the 55-01, but given the kind of tone you're looking for and the fact that you play a lot with a pick, the Sterling Ray 35 is probably a better fit for you.

I've owned both and still have the Ray35. For me the 34" scale was a big consideration, and while I like the sound of a 55-01, a Ray sounds like a Ray.

Both are well-made Indonesian basses with equivalent electronics.
