This struck me as interesting. The idea that programming is one of those things that doesn't require a specific platform would not be appreciated by the likes of Apple and Microsoft.

But it's true. I've recently gotten some of my programs to run with no code changes on Windows, Ubuntu, and Raspberry Pi. These are programs that run with full GUI, and that interact with hardware that I built myself.

The development of platform-independent tools is the reason why I simply no longer care about platforms. A PC is an appliance. Finally. Hooray.

Yeah, but my husband's Chromebox won't open large-ish photos without crashing. Not even one. What's up with that?

I'd like to think you're right, and was even considering a chromebook for my next laptop, but not anymore.

Google and their optimization issues to go along with their ad campaign.

Everything from the ouya platform to a Samsung galaxy phone is subject to some limitation of the OS. It's an outsiders perspective but it seems like google's trying to be the new windows where as windows is kind of trying to become Mac....and Mac.....well, it's stuck, but their mobile devices can run a ton of different things.

Funny you should mention that. I've been messing around with writing software, where the guts of the program are running on a server and the user interface is running in a browser. The server and browser can both be on the same computer, or different computers, and my server software can run on any platform. If one user likes a platform that runs on cheap hardware, another wants to be all open source, and still another likes a platform that "just works" but is more expensive, they can all have what they want.

I'm just fascinated with what's possible nowadays using nothing but free tools.

Can you be more specific about what "crash" means?

Is there a picture that reproducibly crashes the chromebook that you can link to?

It just sits there, trying to open the picture, and doesn't. The fan eventually comes on, and after about 30 seconds the picture will open.

It isn't any particular photo - any of them will do.

but seriously, not all sagers are boat anchors - in fact only the top model, which is specifically intended to be a real desktop replacement, (socketted desktop cpu, socketed, video cards, 3 hard drives,etc) - is really heavy.

there are quite a few other models that are no heavier than any other laptops. and they are the anti-mac - black, plain styling, simple. and 1/2 the price of an equivalent mac. or less.
