Company Description:
"Before we included our Bass in the production line, we consulted some very knowledgable designers. Bass Players ... Jazz Players, Country Purists, Heavy Metal Pounders, Amateurs and professionals alike, all had their opinions. The result of their effort is the Paragon. Available in either standard traditional replaceable maple neck or the neck thru-body custom model. both feature 34" scale, hard maple neck and ebony fretboard with both fretted and fretless configurations. Graphtech Graphite nut and a lightweight alder body. the Paragon is powered by EMG active pickups and held in tune with Schaller Hardware."
This is a rare bass, even the company says its rare to see them. It's a bass made in the mid 80's by Canadian company Larrivée . They still make, and are most known for, their acoustic guitars but for a short while they made basses. I contacted the company on Facebook and sent them the serial number and they got back to me with:
"What you have there, Deryl, is the second generation Larrivée electric bass, the "Paragon". They were built sometime in around 1984/85. Of the very first big names to use this bass was Dave Taylor of Bryan Adams band. ... There were not many of these built so they rarely turn up."
They sent me a couple promotional photos from their 80's catalogue (attached) and they sent me a picture of Dave Taylor and Keith Scott's matching axes (attached). I contacted Dave Taylor on Facebook, sent him the same pics and he got back to me with:
"I still have this bass and John Larrivee has Keith's Scott's. I designed it with Jean Larrivee and did not know there were others like it - I took the fret's out. Played it on Victim of Love."
It has character. Headstock has a few dings, and there's a bit of discoloration on the upper body; however, all in all it's in fantastic shape. The thing is built like a tank, the intonation is flawless and has hardly needed adjusting in the years I've owned it. I had flatwounds on it at one point ( attached video) but it rocks with roundwounds.
This would be an amazing additional to any collection.
