Does anybody have idea wich strings use Larry Grenadier and Charlie Haden? Maybe you read somewhere or something....
Larry Grenadier: (For a long time) D'addario Helicore Hybrid Lights EAD with Velvet Anima G string. But...as you can see in this recent pic it look like he is using spiros on the EAD strings. http://kcsm.org/images/dij/Grenadier_qqq.jpg Charlie Haden: E and A Thomastik Spirocore Mitells (Medium gauge) with D and G Gut wrapped strings Kaplan Golden Spirals.
D and G Gut wrapped strings Kaplan Golden Spirals.[/QUOTE] I used these for years in the 60s and loved them, but I thought they were long discontinued. Maybe they are back now since everyone seems to have discovered the novelty of gut.
No, just recycled or new old stock. Worse, it seems D'Addario now is using the "Kaplan" name for a new formulation, evidently as a competitor to Bel Canto. D'Addario Bowed Strings : Product Details : Kaplan Bass String Set, 3/4 Scale, Medium Tension
Worse, it seems D'Addario now is using the "Kaplan" name for a new formulation, evidently as a competitor to Bel Canto. Amazing! How do they justify the use of the name "Kaplan?" They aren't even gut. I just assumed that kscbass in the earlier post meant wrapped gut and not "Gut wrapped?" The original Golden Spirals were gut, wrapped with nylon or some kind of monofilament material.
D'Addario owns that brand name and used to make Golden Spirals. I believe the Kaplan brand name was used for more than one type of string. - Steve
I guess you are right in a way. According to Mark Perna on an old 06-07 2009 post on TB (this subject has been well-covered a long time ago on TB. Check it out--even P.W. gets into it), Kaplan was bought out by D'Addario in the 70s or 80s. The one's I used just said Kaplan String Company; they must have been prior to the buyout.
I meant wrapped gut. It is gut wrapped in Tynex. From my searches here in talkbass the closest thing is the LaBella Goldentone. Charlie Haden stocked on a bunch of the Golden Spirals when whoever was making them stopped making them.
